Position Overview
We are seeking a Transportation Design Project Manager with strong technical expertise in roadway and traffic design, proven project leadership skills, and a client-focused approach to business development. In this role, you will manage a variety of transportation projects, build and maintain strong client relationships, and contribute to strategic growth across Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The position offers flexibility to work in a remote environment while fostering close collaboration with clients and project teams. Travel will be required as needed to support client engagements and project delivery. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, enjoys working with clients and project teams, has a deep understanding of Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) specifications and processes, is well-connected within the local transportation industry, and demonstrated proficiency in roadway and/or traffic engineering and design.
Core Responsibilities
Serve as Senior Project Manager for roadway, highway, bridge, and multimodal design projects.
Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets, and monitor project performance.
Lead multidisciplinary project teams and mentor staff to enhance technical and professional development.
Perform Quality Control/Quality Assurance for key deliverables on projects managed by others.
Support proposals, presentations, and client meetings to expand the client base.
Build and maintain relationships with Michigan and Great Lakes regional transportation agencies, cities, and municipalities.
Actively participate in professional societies to strengthen industry presence.
Contribute to growth initiatives in the region and provide strategic leadership internally and externally.
Effectively manage projects and collaborate with teams in a remote working environment.
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in roadway design, traffic engineering, or related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
10–25 years of transportation design and project management experience.
Qualifications
Experience using MicroStation and GeoPAK to deliver roadway design projects.
Experience in developing and leading project scopes, schedules, and budgets, and monitoring and controlling project performance
Proven technical skills and successful background in roadway design, traffic engineering/design, PS&E development.
Excellent communication, networking, and relationship-building skills.
Business development experience with public clients such as state DOTs, counties, and municipalities.
Proven experience assisting with proposals and client engagement.
Ability to coordinate project staffing, execution and control on roadway design projects to achieve continuity between scope, schedule, and budget from initial project start up through final
Ability to work effectively in a remote environment and travel as necessary for client meetings and project needs.
Desired Skills and Competencies
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop pursuit and proposal strategies, and deliver successful projects.
Experience working with Michigan and Great Lakes regional transportation agencies, cities, and municipalities.
Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer, MS Project
Demonstrated understanding of MDOT specifications and processes.
